KARACHI: Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Anwar Zaheer Jamali has observed that the federation, Sindh government and all stakeholders should address Rangers reservations in Karachi.
A five-member bench of Supreme Court (SC) presided over by CJP Anwar Zaheer Jamali took up for hearing the Karachi law and order suo motu case on Tuesday in Karachi registry. Sindh IG Ghulam Haider Jamali filed a report in the court on target killings, which stated that 159 cases of target killings took place in Karachi in 2015. Cases of 83 incidents were registered and 53 accused were arrested, while 15 of the accused were killed in police encounters and 25 cases are being investigated by police. The court rejected IG Sindh’s report, declaring it unsatisfactory.
Justice Amir Hani Muslim reprimanded the IG for being ignorant of what is going on under his subordination. “Your report is pieces of paper for us. We have no interest therein. There is nothing therein except statistics. It looks as if you want to tell nothing. It seems from your talks that you have no control over Karachi police,” the judge remarked. The IG Sindh termed the remarks inappropriate, to which Justice Muslim said, “These remarks are appropriate in terms of your performance. If you have any objection then you can file an application. Your officers lie. Your officer who prepares report commits forgery.”
He asked the chief secretary to tell the court about the police department’s performance. The CJP remarked if transfers are made hurriedly then how will the officers perform their duties. “When a police officer is transferred seven times a year it means he has not been allowed to work. How can good governance be ensured in this situation?” The court reprimanded the IG Sindh for not giving an appropriate reply. Chief secretary Siddique Memon also presented a report stating that seven accused persons were released on parole. While addressing the chief secretary, Justice Amir Hani Muslim remarked, “You released the accused. Three among them were convicted in a terrorism case.”
While seeking details of 57 pending cases of target killings from the Sindh IG, the court ordered a report on these cases be filed till Thursday. Parole officer of the Sindh government filed the report in the court in respect of the persons who were released on parole in 2015.
