LAHORE: A division bench of the La
hore High Court (LHC) on Wednesday ordered authorities to release a condemned prisoner, Muhammad Imran, nine year after conviction under murder charge.
Imran was charged with the murder of his wife.
The bench, comprising Ju
stice Sadaqat Ali Khan and Ju
stice Shehram Sarwar, on Wednesday ordered his release.
A sessions court awarded death penalty to Muhammad Imran in 2007 for killing his wife, Bushra, allegedly in the name of honour.
Imran challenged his conviction before the high court.
Counsel
for the appellate Rana Abdul Hameed submitted that the deceased was murdered by
dacoits during resistance in a robbery bid. He said that police instead of arresting the accused converted Bushra’s death into an honour killing case.
He said that the trial court did not consider the evidence about innocence of Imran, and awarded capital punishment on the basis of weak and contradictory evidence. He requested the court to set aside the d
eath sentence and acquit the appellant.
