Hundreds of motorists faced problems finding the main Narawala Road blockage on Monday due to the protest of the University of Agriculture Faisalabad students against increase in their semester fee. Scores of students turned up in front of the Gobindpura Gate, threw traffic out of gear and demanded the administration to withdraw the 25 percent increase in the fee announced recently by the administration.
Talking to reporters, the agitators said that their parents are finding it difficult to pay the hefty university fee. They said the increased the fee during the semester ignoring their financial hardships. They said the university officials were consuming the major resources of the academia and the students were bearing the brunt of their perks and privileges.
Narawala Road is a major thoroughfare being used by the people to reach to different areas and markets. However, the road blockage by the students forced the motorists to go to the streets to reach their destination. People in the residential colonies also faced problems due to influx of traffic in the streets.
The UAF Vice Chancellor Dr Iqrar Ahmed said that the city police officer Khalid Mehmood has recommended formation of a committee to have dialogues with the students and within two days it would be formed. He said the university had to increase fee due to the financial condition and surging prices of the utility bills.
He appreciated the faculty who performed the task of students counseling. Majority of the students paid the fee according to revised fee structure, he claimed citing the university is taking every possible measures for the wellbeing of the students.
