ISLAMABAD: The special court on Friday ordered suspension of identity card and passport of former president Pervaiz Musharraf.
While conducting the hearing of high treason case against Musharraf, the court has sent a copy of the suspension order to the Interior Ministry for immediate action.
On the other hand, the former president has decided to return to the country, while he has also requested the government to provide him security since there is ‘threat’ to Musharraf’s life.
Pervaiz Musharraf’s counsel Advocate Akhtar Shah filed an application in the Federal and Defence Ministry requesting to provide the former president with security since ‘he is willing to present himself before the court pertaining cases against him’.
Musharraf would not be allowed to travel to any country once the government suspends his ID card and passport.
On May 11, 2016, a three-judge bench headed by Peshawar High Court Chief Justice Mazhar Alam Khan Miankhel declared former president Musharraf a proclaimed offender in the high treason case.
The special court had directed the Interior Ministry and Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to advertise the court verdict.
A year later, a special court restrained his counsel from presenting his arguments, noting that it could not hear the lawyer of an absconder.
In May 2017, Musharraf had expressed through a plea his willingness to face the high treason trial under the army’s protection and on assurance from the court that he would be given a safe passage to return to Dubai.
